Why She Lied is a psychological thriller based on Julie Coons’s own story. Even if her instinct tells her not to, Julie ends up in a relationship with James. He seems to be a charming man at first, but something tells Julie to be careful with him. Unfortunately, she ends up being right. James gets caught for the molestation of a child and five years later he’s one of America’s most wanted men. Julie wants to know the truth, no matter what.
Firstly, Why She Lied is an important story on human trafficking and what it does to the people who fall victim to it. It’s absolutely horrifying to read about and it’s still happening, every day. I think Julie Coons is really brave for getting her story out there and helping people with this. However, when it comes to the book being a reading experience, I had some troubles. The story had me on the edge of my seat, but it also felt a bit messy at times. Every now and then it got a bit repetitive and the story kept going back and forth. Even though the book is only 170 pages, it still took me more than a week to get through. Nevertheless, I’m still happy Coons gave me the opportunity to read her work and I think more people should read about this topic, human trafficking!
