Clash tells of a teenager called Cedric who moves from his mom’s to his dad’s place. His dad, Frank, isn’t the easiest person to live together with and soon Cedric has to face some serious problems concerning Frank.

First of all, I want to say that I find it hard to give my opinion on a story that deals with a black main character, while I’m white myself. I don’t have any experience on how it is to be black. The author of this book is also white, which makes it even harder: we don’t get to read a first hand experience in Clash.

Besides that I think the story in itself was good. It deals with family issues, mental health and friendship. However, I still felt a kind of distance between me and Cedric. I think this came because of the way he dealt with the things that happened in his life. It felt a little superficial and fragmented at times. A lot of horrible events took place, but most things weren’t discussed anymore after they’d happened. Nevertheless, the actual story made up for all of this. What I got out of this book was that no matter how horrible a parent treats you, it’s still your parent, even if you don’t want them to be. It’s this bond you just can’t seem to break.

And then the ending … The last couple of pages gave me goosebumps and I thought those were very strong!

I received a paper copy in exchange for an honest review. Thank you! *
