In The Darker Side there is a killer on the loose who uses people’s darkest secrets against them and it seems like they’ve been killing for quite a while now. It’s up to Smokey Barrett and her FBI team to hunt the killer and make them pay for what they did.

The Darker Side was a thrilling and compelling read. The story was detailed in both the case and the personal lives of the main characters. Although this is the third book in the series on Smokey Barrett, I felt like I’d known her and the rest of the team for years. That was a big plus side!

However, I also felt like I was reading the same story for the nth time. The concept of the story: catholic faith and murder, has been used so very often now. Of course it’s still interesting to read about, but I believe it’s also very easy to build a crime story around this theme.

I still want to read the other books in this series, mainly because I found the background of Smokey Barrett intriguing.

  1. So was this the first book in the series you read (I know some thriller series are like that and you can pick up any book in the series without too much trouble)? I find thrillers a bit formulaic in the same sense as you, but good characters could certainly win me over!
