Did I accomplish my new year’s resolutions of 2017?

At the start of 2017 I didn’t make any New Year’s resolutions when it comes to health, excersise or my social life. Instead I had some bookish goals I wanted to complete by the end of the year. Now that the end of 2017 is nearing I was wondering if I perhaps accomplished (some of) my resolutions I made in January 2017? Let’s take a look …

My bookish New Year’s resolutions of 2017 were:

  • Read more classics written by women
  • Read at least one book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin
  • Read a total of 90+ books
  • Kick the ass of my TBR pile
  • Be a bit more critical in my book reviews

I can say for sure that I have accomplished at least two of the five resolutions – I will have read at least 90 books before the end of the year. It was tight and I had to read at least 12 books in December if I wanted to complete my GR reading goal, but I DID IT! I will have a post on an overview of my year in books up on Sunday December 30th!

Besides that I have also become a bit more critical in my book reviews. During the year I have received a lot of review requests, but I haven’t accepted them all. Some books weren’t fit for me or I was too busy with uni work. I have also been a bit more critical in the grading of the books I have read. When I liked a book I didn’t just give it five stars because I liked it. Per book I thought “will I remember this story and do I want to reread it in the future?” If this was the case, I gave the book five stars. If not I just went with my feelings!

Because I was still a literature student in the first half of the year I have also read some classics written by women. Still, I’m not satisfied, because those were not books I chose myself. I’ve only read To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and two Christies, that I think are classics written by women, in my spare time. Let’s hope I get to read more in 2018!

And well, let’s just ignore my TBR pile. I have read a lot of books on my TBR, but I have also bought and gotten a lot of new books that I still need to read … I think I started this year with the same amount (if not less) of books on my TBR as I will end it!

I have also read none of the books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series by George R.R. Martin. BUT … I have finally finished watching the TV series and I can’t wait for the last season!

I also had a top five of books to read in 2017 …

  1. A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
  2. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
  3. Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
  4. Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
  5. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

… and read only one – The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. Also: I think my top five of books to read in 2018 will be very different. Firstly, I won’t have any YA on my list. It’s just not a genre that’s high on my TBR and it was mainly the influence of bookstagram that made me buy these books. I think Wuthering Heights and A Storm of Swords will actually be high on my TBR of 2018, but I still have to think of a new top five for 2018!

Have you accomplished your reading goals of 2017?

  1. I literally had no bookish goals in 2017 except my Goodreads reading challenge. But in 2018 I’ll have a few more… 🙂

I do hope you’ll read Lady Midnight at some point because aside from Cassie’s Infernal Devices books it’s my favorite of hers! And also Throne of Glass, which I didn’t particularly like but I want to know your thoughts on it. Haha
