July book haul #2

2017-07-18 14.01.25

Although I kind of had declared myself to be on a book buying ban, I still bought a book. Sorry wallet! The other book I got for free from a friend I met on instagram, how sweet! Once again, a book haul full of King books. Read further for the blurbs and my thoughts.

Dr. Sleep by Stephen King

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever, The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special 12-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals.

On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless – mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and spunky 12-year-old Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted fans of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Some months ago I finally read The Shining, the sequel to Dr. Sleep and I’ve heard that this one is even better! So I’m really curious and looking forward to reading it! I got this copy from a friend I met on instagram and she was so sweet to personally give it to me, for free! She got it second hand, so now it’s actually third hand, but it’s still in perfect condition!!

Different Seasons by Stephen King

In this classic collection of four novellas, the grand master takes you on irrestistible journeys into the far reaches of horror, heartache and hope.

Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption is the story of two men convicted of murder – one guilty, one innocent – who form the perfect partnership as they dream up a scheme to escape from prison.

In Apt Pupil a golden schoolboy entices an old man with a past to join in a dreadful union.

The Body sees four young boys venture into the woods and find life, death … and the end of innocence.

The Breathing Method is the tale of a doctor who goes to his club and discovers a woman determined to give birth – no matter what.

I have now read three short story collections by Stephen King and I really loved them (my favourite being Full Dark, No Stars)! So when I saw that @29NeiboltStreet was going to host a read along on The Body in August I knew I had to take part, since that short story has been on my TBR forever. Or actually, ever since watching the Family Guy episode on it, really.
